  • Get a big plastic bag. Depending on the size of the grates, you might want to put them all in one plastic bag (these ones are quite large) or individually in a zip lock bag. Using those large trash bags will have you do this process only once with all the grates in it.
  • Pour ammonia into the bag. However, it is not the liquid ammonia we need, its fumes are the active ingredient. The fumes are able to eat through the grease and slime buildup to break them down. Add 2 cups of ammonia in the bag with the grates. This James Austin ammonia is a great option. You won’t be subject to the pungent smell of ammonia.
  • Give it time. Quickly tighten the bag making sure air does not get in or out. Remember, the ammonia fume is what we need. So, ensure it is locked in. Let it sit for hours.
  • Rinse the grates with warm water. After the time has passed, bring out the grates and take them to the tap. Using a scrubbing sponge, wash off the gunk buildup. They should peel off easily as the ammonia fumes have loosened them.
  • Air the grates. Now your stove top grates are clean. Leave them where air can blow at them and let them dry. If you need them sooner, you can use a dry microfiber  cloth to blot the moisture.

Arm & Hammer Pure Baking Soda, 5 lbBaking soda method

  • Scrub off surface dirt. You want to first clean off the surface dirt by washing the grates under running warm water.
  • Make a baking soda paste. Pour some baking soda into a small bowl and add a little water. Mix them together until you have a continuous paste. If you want to deep clean the grates, you can mix the baking soda with vinegar instead of water.
  • Coat the surface of the stove top grates with the paste. Apply the baking soda paste generously on the grates making sure to cover the entire surface.
  • Let sit for 30 minutes. This time will let the baking soda do its job of loosening the dirt build-up.
  • Scrub off the dirt and rinse. After the time has passed, use a non-abrasive sponge to wash off the stuck-on dirt on the grates. Now you have yourself clean stove top grates.

Use a degreaser

  • Generously spray a degreaser on the stove top grates. A heavy-duty degreaser like this Easy Off will work great for this purpose. Make sure to wet the entire surface with the degreaser. The more you coat the buildup, the more it will loosen.
  • Let it sit for at least 30 minutes. Give it ample time to do its thing. If you leave it for long enough, you probably won’t even need to scrub afterward.
  • Use a non-abrasive sponge to scrub. We don’t suggest a steel sponge because we’re sure you don’t want to leave your stove top grates with ugly scratches in the name of cleaning them.
  • Rinse it once again. After all the scrubbing is done, rinse off the dirt and degreaser. By now, you should have yourself a deeply clean stove top grate.
